  • No reverse

I have 99 merc 20 tiller that doesn't go into reverse all the time, sometimes works fine. Had it at a shop here in Pa. said it was just an adjustment .But still doesn't work. I'm thinking maybe shifting rod catching something or limit switch ???? Looking mercury shop in Milford area. Thanks

Is there any water in the lower unit? Not sure if Merc are the same but could be the shift spring or crown gear sticking if the oil is sludgy or if water has made it corrode a little in there.

It shuts down like itís not getting gas or mechanically it wonít shift, like there is resistance when you turn the handle? I had a gunked up carb and the first sign of trouble was when shifting in reverse it would sputter. That was a 2000 9.9 though.

Lower unit has new fluid and seems fine. It seems like something stopping it from going into reverse sometimes other times goes into reverse perfect.
